"Healthy Relationships 101" utilizes in-class assignments, interactive coursework, journal writing and role-playing exercises to teach students a dynamic set of communication and social skills that cultivate character development and support thriving, healthy relationships in all areas of students’ lives. The program is available in semester programs, 10-week programs, and assemblies. Here is a list of topics that are addressed in the course:

     • Effective Communication Tools

     • Bullying Prevention

     • Empathy

     • Healthy Boundaries

     • Media Influence on Relationships

     • Identifying and Avoiding Abusive Relationships

     • Communication Technology and Relationships

     • Texting and Interpersonal Communication

The essential principles of this work help students to articulate their needs and feelings without blame and judgment and to listen empathically.

At the conclusion of the course, a Relationship Foundation instructor will meet with the teacher to assess the effectiveness of the curriculum. These assessments evaluate the impact on the students and explore ways to expand the program’s objectives.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Our Teacher Training Program instructs educators about effective approaches to  incorporating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies into their classes. It provides a detailed curriculum with instructions and exercises to teach "Healthy Relationships 101" to their students and co-workers. This program focuses on the unique social and emotional challenges that students face every day.

Through this training, educators learn communication skills and practices that foster the students’ ability to engage in healthy inter-relating. It will also give teachers a new understanding of their students’ needs and feelings and how modern culture affects their relationships and their self-esteem.

This program includes printed materials, handouts, and resources that support   enhanced communication and understanding, not only with students, but also with parents, administrators, and fellow teachers.

We also work with various organizations that serve communities in need. Trainings are given to professionals in social service agencies and organizations. The Relationship Foundation has provided trainings and resources for mental health providers, social workers and counselors that work in domestic violence facilities, mental health clinics, and drug rehab centers. Most recently, our curriculum/guidebook was ordered by a victim advocate center at an army base in South Carolina.

Through these trainings, we equip facilitators with communication skills that enable them to motivate and engage their clients. The training teaches facilitators how to work with their participants in a more effective and empathic way.

PARENT WORKSHOP

In this workshop, parents explore their own perceptions of relationship dynamics. The instructor guides parents through key points and helps them define their relationships with a focus on needs and feelings expressed without judgment. Most importantly, the workshop provides parents with the tools to strengthen their relationships with their children and to foster their child's personal development and sense of self-worth and well-being.

The workshop includes a discussion on the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study and the impact of trauma on childhood development. Through inquiry and practice of our communication skill set, parents can share what they have learned with their children to help fortify the parent/child bond and to foster their child's resiliency.

ASSEMBLIES

The assemblies covers the key points of the "Healthy Relationships 101" curriculum. Using interactive exercises and role-playing, the instructor addresses perceptions of relationships, utilizing a highly effective communication skill set that promotes Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). The main outcome of the workshop is to develop communication skills that enhance empathic listening. The benefits also include a deeper understanding of social issues, building resiliency, increasing self-esteem, and providing conflict prevention skills.
